Edward married Ellen Emon on 20 Apr 1747 in St John the Bap tist, Broughton, Lancs.

Edward & Ellen were mentioned as papists in the publicatio n "Return of the Papists, Diocese of Chester, August 1767 " published by the Catholic Records Society Occasional Publ ications No. 1, 1980, a transcription of the House of Lord s Archive Book Ref. 6/139-171.

Registered were Edward Billington, husbandman, age 52, resi dent in Broughton, Haighton for 13 years, Ellen, his wife a ged 50, their children Ellen aged 18, Margaret aged 12, Jam es aged 10, William aged 8, and John aged 6.

They moved from farm to farm, all of their children were bo rn in different places. When Kathleen Swinn visited him, h e lived in a tiny, thatched cottage with his housekeeper Mi ss Scott. Apparently they were living together He once lef t her & went to live in Royston with cousin Freddy. Afterwa rds he returned to Miss Scott, small, wore long black cloth es, hat with a brown rim and massive hat pin.

Witnesses to their wedding were William North and Fanny Swi nn.

Kathleen Swinn went to see him, long, white beard in high b ed, all in white, before he died.
